Taxis are readily available and are the easiest, most convenient forms of transport. All the taxis are generally very good specification saloon/sedan cars e.g. Toyota Camry. The taxis are painted yellow. All the taxis are metered so you do not need to haggle nor can you get cheated.
Taxis are available at all hotels, malls and outside many of the major short term rental developments on offer on the site such as the Dubai Marina or the Palm Jumeirah. Generally, taxis can pretty much be picked up on most roads within a few minutes of waiting.
You may also want to travel by boat. Boat travel is certainly popular in crossing the Dubai Creek. A traditional 2 minute ride is available for only 2 AED.  Boats are also available to go from one end of Dubai to the other e.g. From the Dubai Marina to the Dubai Creek.
You can also hire your own boat (with or without a driver) and this is not necessarily very expensive between a group.
The Dubai Metro opened on 09/09/09 and provides a world class transportation facility from the airport to all the major areas in Dubai.
Dubai buses are offering increasing routes however, it is still not well connected. Some routes do provide a good alternative to taxis for short trips.
